 Rating 5   Thoughtful and sensitive
Margaret Trost's book is a thoughtful recollection of emotions and actions that speaks to the heart. Her honesty and vulnerability is refreshing and allows personal connection with the story. She demonstrates how God can work through one person, if only they allow Him to use them. I have been involved in bringing others to Haiti on "reverse missions" over the past 6 years. I will certainly recommend this book to those participating in the future!!

Rating 5   Simple, effective story that may inspire you to help someone, too
This book was simply written, a quick read, and was one woman's story of how she visited Haiti once and was compelled to return and start a food program. What I liked about it was that although the author found the problems in Haiti overwhelming and devastating, she still pushed forward to make one contribution...from that one step, the program continued to expand. It was inspiring to me how one determined person can make a difference, a world of difference, in a sphere of influence. Also, her description of how precious food was to the hungry have made me sensitive to how I treat my own food and other resources and made me cognizant of avoiding waste.

Rating 4   Moving account of one persons efforts in haiti
I really enjoyed this book. It included a brief overview of Haitian History, some of the roots of the problems. The author has an inspiring example of an individuals ability to make changes in an overwhelming problem. Well written and motivating.

Rating 5   A Little Book Is A Big Read
Margaret Trost's book On That Day Everybody Ate - One Woman's Story of Hope and Possibility in Haiti is a must read for those interested in Haiti. Although Margaret suffered a tragic loss, she did not dwell on it. On her personal trips to Haiti, she was unflinchingly honest about her reactions to Haiti's desperate poverty. As a reader, what hooked me were her poignant descriptions of individual Haitians. Further, her brief but incisive inclusion of Haiti's political and economic history gave the book credibility. Overall, Ms. Trost was much too modest about her organizational skills and ability to meet the challenges of supporting St. Clare's food program. I have read her book three times and enjoy it more each time I read it. For all of us who struggle with some of the world's challenges, I like to remember Fr. Gerry Jean-Juste's advice, Piti piti no rive (little by little we will arrive) and his final advice, "We are here to love." Thank you Margaret - you wrote a remarkably inspiring book.

 Rating 5   Haiti- Especially now
This book captures the Haiti that was! Now that the earthquake has decimated the country it is even more meaningful to read about Margaret's amazing journey of the last ten years where she created a grassroots community with Father Gerry to feed the children of the St. Clare's community in Port-au-Prince.

What is so wonderful to know is that this What if? Foundation is positioned now to feed 3,000 people a day and those same characters so lovingly portrayed in her book are still alive and preparing the rice and beans today.

With an introduction from Paul Farmer of Partner's in Health and a story of one woman embracing a new life, this book is a gem. In addition all proceeds from the book will benefit the What If? Foundation.

If you loved Tracy Kidder's Mountains beyond Mountains, you will be so happy you found this book.
